CONFERENCE FAQ

I AM not the MEdia wants you to feel comfortable with your decision to let your teen spend the weekend with us. We believe that media literacy is an incredibly important topic but nothing is more important to a parent than the safety of their child. We've tried to answer some common questions below but please let us know if you have a question and do not see an answer!

‚Äč

  • Q: How many chaperones will there be?

    • A: There will be at least 10 chaperones at all times.

  • Q: What is the ratio of chaperones to teens?

    • A: 1 chaperone for every 10 teens

  • Q: Will the boys and girls be separated?

    • A: During the day and for activities, the teens will be organized by age groups not by sex or gender. The dormitories will have separate accommodations for girls and boys.

  • Q: How are the dorm arrangements set up and will chaperones be near by?

    • A: The dorm arrangements will be by floor - boys on one floor, girls on another floor, and so on. The chaperones will be sleeping on the same floors as their gender-identified group in the same ratio as during the day (1 chaperone for every 10 teens).

  • Q: Will the age groups be separated or grouped together?

    • Throughout the conference, there will be several sessions each day that focus on a particular topic or to work on a certain project. The overall sessions will be a mix of all the ages in attendance; however, the teens will be divided into smaller subgroups that are based on their ages (13-14 year olds, 15-16 year olds, and 17 year olds). They will stick closely with these subgroups throughout all of the sessions and activities over the weekend.

  • Q: Will my teen have access to their cell phone throughout the conference?

    • Absolutely! This is a media conference so we want your teen to have access to their cell phone at all times. We will be taking photos, posting videos, and they may teach the chaperones a bit about SnapChat at the same time. We will ask the teens to keep the phone calls and text messages to a minimum as we wouldn't want to distract others but they will be easy to contact, if needed, all weekend.
